President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, addressed Nigerians on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, in a national broadcast marking the country’s 65th Independence Anniversary.
The President reflected on Nigeria’s journey since independence in 1960, acknowledging the sacrifices of the nation’s founding fathers, including Herbert Macaulay, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Sir Ahmadu Bello, Margaret Ekpo, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, and others.

Nationhood & Progress
Tinubu noted that while Nigeria has faced civil war, military rule, and political crises, the country has survived with resilience and made progress in education, healthcare, infrastructure, technology, and industry. -
Economic Reforms
The President emphasized his administration’s reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidy and multiple exchange rates, saying they were painful but necessary.- GDP growth hit 4.23% in Q2 2025, the fastest in four years.
- Inflation dropped to 20.12% in August 2025, the lowest in three years.
- Non-oil revenue surpassed ₦20 trillion by August 2025.
- External reserves rose to $42.03 billion, the highest since 2019.
- Nigeria recorded five consecutive trade surpluses, with non-oil exports now at 48%.
- Oil production rebounded to 1.68 million barrels per day.
- The naira stabilised, and multiple exchange rates were scrapped.

Social Investments
- ₦330 billion disbursed to eight million households under social programmes.
- Over 510,000 students benefited from NELFUND loans.
- Credicorp granted ₦30 billion loans to 153,000 Nigerians.
- YouthCred provided credit for NYSC members.

Major rail, road, and coastal highway projects are ongoing, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Kano-Maradi Standard Gauge Rail, and Sokoto-Badagry Highway. -
Security
Tinubu praised the Armed Forces for gains against terrorism, IPOB/ESN, and banditry, noting that peace has returned to many communities in the North. -
Message to Youths
He urged Nigerian youths to “dream big, innovate, and conquer more territories,” while assuring continued government support through initiatives like iDICE and loans for education, technology, and creative enterprises. -
Hope for the Future
Acknowledging current hardships, Tinubu assured citizens that reforms were laying a solid foundation for future prosperity.“The worst is over. Yesterday’s pains are giving way to relief… With Almighty God on our side, the dawn of a new, prosperous, self-reliant Nigeria is here,” he said.
The President concluded with a call for unity, productivity, and patriotism, urging Nigerians to patronise Made-in-Nigeria goods, pay their taxes, and contribute to nation-building.
