A tragic boat accident has claimed the lives of five siblings in Obagaji, the headquarters of Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State. The incident occurred on Sunday evening when an overloaded boat carrying several passengers reportedly capsized midstream.
According to eyewitness accounts, the victims were children of a man who was also on board. The boat, which was ferrying passengers across the river, suddenly lost balance and overturned, throwing everyone into the water.
Local residents and divers immediately launched rescue efforts, but sadly, all five children drowned before help could reach them. Their bodies were later recovered and confirmed dead at the scene.
The heartbreaking incident has plunged the Obagaji community into mourning, with sympathisers trooping to the bereaved father’s home to offer condolences. Witnesses described the scene as devastating, with many community members struggling to come to terms with the loss.
Residents have since appealed to the Benue State government and relevant maritime authorities to enforce strict safety measures on waterways in the area. They stressed the need for proper regulation to prevent overloading of boats and to ensure that all vessels meet basic safety standards, especially during the rainy season when river levels rise and accidents become more frequent.
Community leaders also urged boat operators to prioritize the safety of passengers by providing life jackets and avoiding dangerous trips during bad weather.
