The Fulani community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State has raised alarm over what it described as persistent and unprovoked attacks on herders and their livestock by suspected natives in the area.
In a statement issued on Friday and signed by the group’s secretary, Abdullahi Yusuf, the herders condemned what they termed “coordinated assaults” on Fulani communities, warning that such attacks, if not checked, could trigger reprisals and escalate into widespread bloodshed.
The statement, titled “Another Attack on Fulani Herders in Riyom,” narrated how suspected Berom youths allegedly attacked a herder, Aliyu Sale Shehu, around Rim community, Rim Ward, on Thursday, October 2, 2025.
According to Yusuf, the herder sustained gunshot wounds during the incident, while one cow was killed and eight others were injured. “This attack was completely unprovoked. Our people are being attacked, our cattle are being killed, and our means of livelihood destroyed,” he said.
The group accused local authorities and community leaders of remaining silent despite repeated attacks, saying the lack of justice only emboldens perpetrators. “Since the Thursday attack on Sale, there has been no statement, no action, and no justice from the government or community leaders,” the statement read.
The herders further lamented what they described as a double standard in the handling of conflicts. “They will attack our people mercilessly and if some of the affected herders decide to fight back, they will be tagged bandits and aggressors,” Yusuf said.
Calling for urgent intervention, the group urged security agencies and the Plateau State Government to act swiftly to prevent further violence. “The Fulani are equal citizens of Riyom and Plateau State, and our lives and properties must be protected. Enough is enough,” Yusuf declared.
