Authorities in Delta State, Nigeria, have launched a manhunt for a father accused of impregnating his biological daughter in what activists have described as a deeply disturbing case of incest and abuse.
According to reports shared online by activist Harrison Gwamnishu, the man whose identity has not yet been disclosed for legal and privacy reasons allegedly committed the act in Otulu community, Delta State, before going into hiding.
Gwamnishu, a well-known human rights advocate and founder of the Behind Bars Human Rights Foundation, confirmed that the young survivor, now reportedly pregnant, has been rescued and placed under the care of his NGO.
He stated that both the victim and her children are receiving medical, psychological, and emotional support, as well as temporary shelter through a volunteer network.
In a statement shared via his verified social media pages, Gwamnishu condemned the act and urged law enforcement agencies to “immediately arrest and prosecute the suspect” to ensure justice is served and to prevent further harm.
He also cited relevant sections of Nigerian law that criminalize incest and related offences.
“Incest, which involves sexual relations between close blood relatives, is a serious criminal offence under Nigerian law,” he wrote.
“According to Sections 214 and 390 of the Criminal Code Act, any person who engages in incest commits a felony and faces up to seven years in prison.
If the victim is under 18, the offender may be charged with defilement or rape, which carries a life imprisonment sentence under Section 218 of the Criminal Code or Section 31 of the Child Rights Act.”
The case has drawn widespread outrage online, with social media users and advocacy groups demanding swift justice and improved protections for victims of sexual violence within families.
Gwamnishu’s organization has called on the Delta State Police Command and the Ministry of Women Affairs to intervene urgently and ensure the fugitive suspect is apprehended.
