A tragic confrontation over a simple act of courtesy turned deadly in Dallas on October 7, when 22-year-old Keona Hampton allegedly shot and killed 41-year-old Cecilia Simpson outside the Wheatland Towne Crossing shopping center.
According to CBS News and the Dallas Police Department, the altercation began inside a Five Below store after Simpson reportedly held a door open for Hampton. When Hampton didn’t say “thank you,” Simpson became upset, sparking a verbal dispute that soon turned physical.
Simpson and a friend later went to a nearby PetSmart to seek help, telling employees that Hampton was following them. Witnesses say Hampton entered the PetSmart twice, continuing to argue before staff asked everyone to leave.
The situation escalated further in the parking lot. Investigators say Hampton threw a drink bottle at Simpson’s vehicle, prompting Simpson to confront her. The argument quickly became physical, with Simpson allegedly striking Hampton multiple times. Moments later, Hampton pulled out a black and silver handgun and fired three shots, hitting Simpson and causing her to collapse.
Officers responded to reports of a shooting just after 1 p.m., finding Simpson suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was rushed to Methodist Central Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Police say Hampton fled the scene but was later found, arrested, and charged with murder. During questioning, she admitted to arguing and fighting with Simpson but claimed she fired in an attempt to “get [Simpson] away from her.”
The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
