Tension has engulfed the Northbank area of Makurdi, Benue State, following a bloody confrontation between rival cult groups that left one person gruesomely beheaded in the early hours of Tuesday.
Eyewitnesses told reporters that the violence began suddenly, with residents waking up to the sound of gunshots, machete fights, and cries for help as the rival gangs clashed in the streets.
The victim, whose identity had not been confirmed at press time, was reportedly found decapitated, sparking panic among locals and prompting an immediate security response.
Security operatives, including personnel from the Nigeria Police Force and other agencies, were deployed to the area to restore order and prevent further violence.
A police source confirmed that patrols have been intensified across Northbank and nearby communities to forestall reprisal attacks, adding that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the killing.
The incident marks yet another episode in the recurring wave of cult-related violence that has plagued parts of Makurdi and other urban centers in Benue State, leaving residents fearful and demanding stronger action from security agencies.
