A Kano State High Court has sentenced two men to death by hanging for the 2018 murder of a local businessman, Abba Aminu Yalwa.
The convicts, Sagiru Lawan and Kabiru Yusuf (also known as Alaramma), were found guilty of killing Yalwa after luring him to a location in Danbare, Kano metropolis, under the pretense of showing him a plot of land.
Delivering judgment on Thursday, October 16, 2025, Justice Sunusi Ado Ma’aji of High Court No. 15 ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.
“The prosecution counsel, Barrister Aminu Ado Bello, presented strong and convincing evidence which proved the murder charge against the two defendants,” Justice Ma’aji stated.
According to court documents, the incident occurred in July 2018 after Yalwa reportedly demanded a refund of money he had earlier given to Sagiru Lawan. The two convicts then plotted to lure the victim to Danbare, where the fatal attack took place.
The prosecution presented six witnesses and multiple exhibits to establish the case.
After reviewing the evidence, Justice Ma’aji found both men guilty of culpable homicide in violation of Section 221(b) of the Penal Code, which prescribes the death penalty for such offences.
He therefore sentenced Sagiru Lawan and Kabiru Yusuf (Alaramma) to death by hanging.
The judgment brings to a close a case that had been ongoing since 2018, marking another major conviction in Kano’s efforts to curb violent crimes.
