According to a report by the New York Post on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, a former North Carolina middle school gym teacher, Ernest Nichols, who once described himself as a “pig” after admitting to sexually assaulting a teenage girl, was killed by another inmate over the weekend.
Authorities said the 60-year-old was found dead inside his cell at Greene Correctional Institution in Maury around 6:50 a.m. on Sunday, prompting an immediate facility-wide lockdown.
By Tuesday, the Greene County Sheriff’s Office had issued a murder warrant against fellow inmate Wilbert Baldwin, who is already serving a sentence for second-degree murder, according to WRAL.
Nichols had been serving a 15-year sentence following his 2011 conviction for statutory rape. He was first arrested in 2009 on 27 counts, including multiple sexual offenses, after investigators discovered that he had repeatedly assaulted a 15-year-old girl over several months in 2008.
At the time of his arrest, Nichols had worked for 14 years as a physical education teacher at Ranson Middle School in Charlotte. Upon learning of the allegations, school administrators suspended him without pay and barred him from campus, WBTV reported.
Court documents revealed that Nichols contacted the victim through fake social media accounts, posing as his own son on Facebook and MySpace. Over a six-month period, he sent the girl explicit messages, made disturbing sexual requests, and at times watched her engage in sexual acts with another male. He also coerced her into lying that she willingly participated in the encounters.
The assaults reportedly took place inside Nichols’ family home. When confronted by the victim’s mother, Nichols confessed to the abuse, describing himself as a “pig.”
During his 2009 arrest, police recovered videotapes, a camera, photographs, and sex toys from his residence.
Throughout court proceedings, Nichols refused to cooperate, repeatedly declining to enter a plea or acknowledge the charges. At one point, he claimed he was not a “straw man” and said he did not understand the legal process, leading the judge to order that he be physically restrained by a bailiff.
Before his death, Nichols had been serving his term with a projected release date of September 2027.
