Veteran comedian and actor Atunyota Alleluya Akpobome, popularly known as Alibaba, has shared his views on polygamy, describing the practice as one that can bring practical and cultural benefits when properly understood.
Speaking in an interview with media personality Nedu, Alibaba explained that, in certain circumstances, having multiple wives can encourage stability and cooperation within relationships.
According to the comedian, “Some people believe that when you have only one wife, you may not be able to control her. But when she knows there’s another woman in the picture, she calms down because she knows she’s not the only one.”
Citing examples from traditional societies, Alibaba recalled how women in Ibadan once encouraged their husbands to take additional wives to maintain harmony and reduce infidelity.
“Back then, some women even found younger girls and gave them to their husbands because they didn’t want them keeping concubines,” he said.
Alibaba also noted that polygamy was sometimes born out of necessity — particularly in cases where widows needed care and protection after their husbands’ deaths.
“When a man dies and leaves a young wife with children, the family might ask who among the brothers can take care of her — that’s part of how polygamy evolved,” he added.
While acknowledging that polygamy remains a controversial subject in modern society, the veteran entertainer maintained that it still holds relevance today.
“Many who criticize it often end up having children with multiple partners,” Alibaba remarked, suggesting that modern relationships often mirror the same dynamics under different labels.
