Chhattisgarh: 21-Year-Old Man Arrested for Murdering Nurse Girlfriend, Attempting to Stage It as Suicide
A shocking crime has come to light in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, where a 21-year-old man allegedly killed his girlfriend, a 23-year-old nurse, and tried to make the murder look like a suicide. Police say the accused, identified as Durgesh Verma, was arrested within hours of the incident after a swift and coordinated investigation.
The victim, Priyanka Das, worked as a nurse at a private hospital in Raipur. Originally from Haldibari in the Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur district, she was living alone in a rented house near Patel Chowk in Lalpur, under the Tikrapara police station limits.
According to investigators, on the intervening night of October 8 and 9, Verma went to Priyanka’s residence armed with a knife. An argument broke out between the two, during which Verma, in a fit of rage, allegedly stabbed Priyanka multiple times, killing her on the spot. In an attempt to mislead authorities, he then placed the knife in her hand to make it appear as though she had taken her own life, before fleeing the scene.
Police were alerted to the incident soon after and launched an immediate investigation. A joint team from the Anti-Crime and Cyber Unit and Tikrapara Police gathered statements from neighbors, who reported hearing an argument and commotion that night. Based on witness statements and other evidence, investigators quickly identified Verma as the prime suspect.
He was arrested within hours and, during interrogation, confessed to committing the crime. Verma reportedly told police that he had been in a relationship with Priyanka for about a year. However, their relationship had become strained due to his growing suspicions that she was seeing someone else. This mistrust had led to frequent arguments between the two.
On the night of the murder, driven by jealousy and anger, Verma allegedly bought a vegetable knife from a local shop before heading to Priyanka’s house to confront her. The conversation escalated into a heated argument, during which he lost control and stabbed her repeatedly. He then tried to stage the scene as a suicide in a desperate attempt to evade suspicion.
The murder weapon has been recovered, and Verma has been booked under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Tikrapara Police Station.
Police officials praised the quick coordination between units that led to the suspect’s arrest in such a short span. Authorities continue to investigate the case to uncover any additional motives or evidence that could strengthen the prosecution’s case.
