A 55-year-old woman receiving treatment at a New York City hospital has died after being brutally assaulted by her hospital roommate, who allegedly had a known history of violent behavior.
The victim, Cynthia Vann, was attacked while sleeping in her room at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln in Mott Haven on September 10, 2025, according to News 12.
Vann, who had been admitted for liver treatment, suffered severe head injuries during the assault and was rushed into emergency surgery. Despite remaining under care at the hospital for more than two weeks, she succumbed to her injuries on Saturday, September 27.
The New York City Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Vann died of blunt force trauma to the head. Her death has been officially ruled a homicide.
Vann’s daughter, Taneisha Vann, spoke to reporters, describing the devastating impact of her mother’s death.
“It’s heartbreaking. I’m broken inside. It’s very difficult. My mom was my support system. She was really all I had,” she said.
“She didn’t deserve this. No one deserves to be assaulted at a hospital while you’re sleeping. You’re supposed to feel safe.”
The grieving daughter also criticized the hospital for failing to protect her mother, saying that the environment allowed such an attack to occur.
“I’m angry with the hospital that allowed this situation to happen,” she added.
Vann would have turned 56 on October 9, a milestone her family is now forced to mourn instead of celebrate.
The alleged attacker, who has not been publicly identified, reportedly had a documented history of aggression prior to being placed in the same room as Vann. Authorities are now investigating how the hospital handled the patient’s placement and whether adequate safety measures were in place.
Police confirmed the case remains under investigation, with no immediate word on charges against the assailant.
