Tension erupted in Abuja on Monday morning as security operatives fired gunshots and tear gas to disperse protesters demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Among those at the protest was human rights activist and #RevolutionNow convener, Omoyele Sowore, who narrowly escaped as the situation turned chaotic.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 7:00 a.m., when a combined team of police and military officers stormed the protest venue, taking full control of the area.
A viral video circulating on social media shows Sowore and other demonstrators fleeing the scene, as gunshots rang out and tear gas canisters filled the air.
The protesters had planned to march to Aso Rock Presidential Villa to demand the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in detention facing terrorism-related charges.
Prior to the protest, the Nigeria Police Force had issued a warning to the organizers, cautioning against any form of demonstration near the Presidential Villa and urging the public to avoid unlawful gatherings.
As of the time of this report, it remains unclear if any arrests or casualties occurred during the dispersal. Security personnel are said to have maintained heavy presence around key locations in Abuja to prevent further unrest.
