Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has reportedly been arrested by the Nigerian Police shortly after leaving the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday.
According to reports by @SaharaReporters, the arrest was ordered by the Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Sowore had appeared in court earlier in the day to attend proceedings related to what he called a “bogus and farcical” charge of alleged forgery of a police wireless message a case he claims was filed under the instruction of the “illegal Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.”
Sources say that after learning that the presiding judge, Justice Emeka Nwite, would not be sitting, Sowore was approached by a police officer who informed him that he was under arrest on the orders of the FCT Commissioner of Police.
Members of his legal team, led by human rights lawyer Tope Temokun, immediately confronted the officers and demanded to know the reason for the arrest. However, the police reportedly insisted they were acting on “direct instruction” and proceeded to escort Sowore into a waiting vehicle.
Sowore, who is well known as the publisher of SaharaReporters and convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, has a long history of activism and has been one of the most outspoken critics of government corruption and abuse of power in Nigeria.
Since 2019, he has faced multiple arrests, detentions, and legal battles over his activism and calls for better governance.
