A well-known veterinary doctor and former chairman of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter, Dr. Ifeanyi Ogbu, has been killed after being abducted alongside his three children by gunmen in Abuja.
The tragic incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Friday in Kubwa, a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory, when heavily armed men invaded the doctor’s residence. According to local sources, the attackers abducted Dr. Ogbu and his three children while his nursing wife and other family members were left unharmed.
Family members and colleagues said that while the family was hopeful for a safe release, Dr. Ogbu’s lifeless body was later found dumped by the roadside, sparking shock and grief within the veterinary community. His three children are still being held captive by the abductors.
A close associate of the deceased, Andrew Gabriel Ikechukwu, confirmed the development in a post shared on Facebook, describing the incident as devastating.
“Dr. Ifeanyi Ogbu, the immediate past chairman of the NVMA FCT chapter, who was kidnapped alongside his three children from his home in Kubwa, Abuja, has been found dead. The three children are yet to be released. May God please intervene,” Ikechukwu wrote.
The killing has thrown the veterinary community into mourning, with tributes pouring in from friends, colleagues, and professional bodies across the country. Many described Dr. Ogbu as a dedicated professional, mentor, and family man who was passionate about advancing veterinary medicine in Nigeria.
A colleague, reacting to the news, said:
“Nigeria just happened to my age-long friend, Ifeanyi. His untimely death is a painful reminder of the insecurity that continues to affect families and communities in Nigeria.”
The murder of Dr. Ogbu comes amid growing concerns over rising insecurity in Abuja. Just days earlier, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, a 29-year-old lawyer and news anchor with Arise Television, was killed during an armed robbery attack at her residence in Katampe, Abuja.
Maduagwu, who was known for her advocacy on gender-based violence and education reform, was reportedly attacked in her home and fatally injured. Her death has since sparked nationwide outrage and renewed calls for improved security in the Federal Capital Territory.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has already reacted to Maduagwu’s murder, directing security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
The latest killing of Dr. Ogbu has further heightened public anxiety, with many residents expressing fear over the spate of violent crimes and kidnappings across the capital city.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Police Force had not yet issued an official statement regarding the abduction and killing. However, sources confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and efforts are being made to rescue the three abducted children and apprehend the perpetrators.
