Brazilian football icon Zico has hailed former Super Eagles captain Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha as the greatest African footballer of all time.
Speaking on the latest episode of John Obi Mikel’s Obi One Podcast, the legendary midfielder praised Okocha’s unique talent, flair, and creativity on the pitch, describing his style as “fantastic.”
“I like Okocha a fantastic player. Number 10, Okocha,” Zico said while discussing the best African players he has ever seen. “Eto’o, fantastic. George Weah, Drogba,” he added, mentioning other greats who have left their mark on the global stage.
Zico, often regarded as one of the most skillful attacking midfielders in football history, said Okocha’s style reminded him of what football is truly about joy, skill, and entertainment.
The Brazilian legend, however, maintained that his compatriot Pelé remains the greatest footballer of all time, globally.
Austin Okocha, now 52, represented Nigeria’s Super Eagles between 1993 and 2006, earning 73 caps and scoring 14 goals. Known for his dazzling dribbles, vision, and creative playmaking, Okocha remains one of Africa’s most celebrated footballers and a fan favorite across generations.
