Boy Pretended to Be Asleep as Killer Stood in His Bedroom Doorway and His Quick Thinking Helped Catch Him
In a story as chilling as it is heartbreaking, a four-year-old boy’s quick thinking helped solve a brutal double murder that claimed the lives of his great-grandparents in Darke County, Ohio, USA.
Late one night in March 2003, little Dameon Huffman awoke to see what he later described as a “green monster” standing in his bedroom doorway. Terrified, the child pretended to be asleep unaware that the figure before him had just murdered the people who loved him most.
Moments earlier, Greg Myers, 25, had fatally shot his father, Jack Myers (51), and stepmother, Linda Myers (55), while they slept. The attack was motivated by greed Greg, who had been struggling financially, hoped to claim his father’s inheritance. Ironically, Greg had been the best man at Jack and Linda’s wedding less than a year before the killings.
When Dameon awoke the next morning, he found both of his great-grandparents dead. The phone line had been cut, leaving him unable to call for help. Barefoot and covered in blood, the four-year-old ran over a mile to his preschool, telling teachers through tears that “they were melting.”
Police soon discovered the horrifying scene the bodies still warm, the house eerily silent. At first, investigators feared Dameon may have come face-to-face with the killer, after finding traces of blood in his bedroom.
Too young to describe what he’d seen, Dameon was later able to help detectives by reenacting the scene with a model home and dolls. When he pointed to Greg’s figure, he quietly said, “I heard a click,” describing the sound of his door opening. That small detail became a crucial clue.
As detectives dug deeper, Greg’s alibi began to crumble. A discarded shotgun and a green jumpsuit with latex gloves were later found in a nearby stream. A fingerprint on one glove matched Greg’s perfectly. Police also uncovered financial motives Greg stood to inherit the family’s 40-acre farm and pizza business.
In 2004, Greg Myers was convicted of two counts of aggravated murder and aggravated robbery. He was sentenced to two life terms without parole and remains imprisoned at Marion Correctional Institution in Ohio.
Lead investigator Mark Whittaker recalled breaking the news to Dameon’s mother, Amber, who collapsed upon hearing it: “Greg was family someone we trusted.”
The case remains one of the most haunting examples of how even in unimaginable horror, a child’s bravery and memory can lead to justice.
