In a chilling case of domestic violence and deception, a 25-year-old electrician from Bengaluru has been arrested for allegedly murdering his wife and then attempting to cover up the crime as an accidental electrocution.
The accused, identified as Prashant Kammar, a native of Huvina Hadagali in Ballari district, was taken into custody by the Hebbagodi police on charges of killing his 32-year-old wife, Reshma, at their residence in Maragondanahalli.
The case came to light after Reshma’s 15-year-old daughter returned home from school on October 15 and found the bathroom door locked. Upon forcing it open, she discovered her mother lying motionless on the floor. Alarmed, the teenager immediately called her grandmother, Renuka, who rushed to the spot with neighbors. Reshma was taken to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.
Initially, Prashant told Reshma’s family that she had been electrocuted while using a water heater. He had reportedly placed her body in the bathroom, filled a bucket with water, and turned on the heater to make the scene look like a tragic accident.
However, police soon grew suspicious after noticing inconsistencies in his account and signs of struggle on the victim’s body. “During interrogation, the accused broke down and confessed to strangling his wife following a heated argument,” a senior police officer said.
Investigations revealed that Reshma had met Prashant around nine months ago through Instagram, and their friendship quickly turned into a romantic relationship. The two got married soon after.
Police sources said the marriage was troubled from the beginning. Prashant, described as possessive and insecure, frequently accused Reshma of being unfaithful and often picked quarrels with her.
“On the day of the incident, the couple had another argument. In a fit of rage, Prashant assaulted and strangled her to death. He then tried to stage the scene to mislead her family and police,” the investigating officer added.
Reshma was previously married to a man named Surender, who passed away a year after their wedding due to illness. The couple shared a 15-year-old daughter, who was living with Reshma and Prashant at the time of the murder.
Following the incident, Reshma’s sister Renuka filed a formal complaint, leading to Prashant’s arrest. The Hebbagodi police registered a case under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for murder and have launched a detailed investigation.
In an official statement, Hebbagodi police confirmed that Prashant had confessed to the crime during questioning. “The accused admitted that he suspected his wife of infidelity. He told us he slapped her during an argument, and when the fight escalated, he strangled her. To conceal the crime, he tried to pass it off as a case of electrocution,” the officer said.
The police are now examining the forensic evidence and call records of both the victim and the accused to determine whether Prashant’s suspicions had any basis or were driven purely by jealousy.
The case has once again highlighted the rising number of domestic violence-related murders in Bengaluru and nearby districts. Officials emphasized the importance of early intervention in volatile relationships and urged victims of domestic abuse to seek help.
Reshma’s daughter is now staying with her maternal relatives, while Prashant remains in police custody as the investigation continues.
