Nigerian singer, Abiola Ahmed Akinbiyi, popularly known as Bella Shmurda, has addressed claims that Nigerian artistes are overcharging for live performances.
The “Eye Clear” crooner stated that musicians’ high performance fees are justified by the huge costs they incur while producing and promoting their music.
According to Bella Shmurda, artistes spend a significant portion of their income paying producers, songwriters, engineers, and other professionals who work behind the scenes.
“Speaking from the perspective of an artiste, making music is expensive. I don’t repeat clothes because I’m a public figure.
I spent $100,000 to pay producers, songwriters, and engineers that worked on my album — that’s over ₦100 million. Not to mention music videos and promotion costs. That’s a lot,” he said.
The singer added that the cost of maintaining a celebrity lifestyle also contributes to their high fees, explaining that artistes must charge enough to at least recover their production expenses.
“So, when I go for a show, I charge what equates to my investment. Even if I don’t make profit, I should at least recover the cost of production.
We are not overcharging. If you look at it from our own perspective, you’ll agree with us,” he concluded.
