Reality TV star Josephina Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, has responded to backlash following her decision to attend a social event shortly after her sister’s burial.
The former Big Brother Naija winner came under fire after videos circulated online showing her smiling and dancing at a party just days after laying her sister to rest. Many social media users labeled her actions as “insensitive” and questioned how she could appear “so happy” during a time of mourning.
In a heartfelt post shared via her Instagram story, Phyna defended herself, asserting that no one has the right to dictate how she should grieve.
“You can’t tell me how to grieve,” she wrote. “People heal differently. I have cried my eyes out, and if I choose to step out and try to smile again, that’s my choice.”
Phyna explained that grief manifests in different ways, emphasizing that people often judge without understanding another’s healing process.
“You all think mourning means locking yourself in a dark room forever. It doesn’t. Some of us are trying to survive the pain by being around people who make us laugh,” she added.
She clarified that attending the party was not a sign of disrespect but a personal effort to “ease the weight” of her loss.
The post has since sparked mixed reactions online. While some fans defended her right to grieve in her own way, others argued that public figures should be mindful of how their actions might be perceived.
“People forget that celebrities are human too,” one supporter commented. “Phyna is just trying to stay strong.”
Amid the ongoing debate, Phyna urged her followers to focus on compassion rather than criticism, reminding them that “grief has no manual — it’s personal.”
