Hollywood icon Angelina Jolie has opened up about her decision to undergo a preventive double mastectomy, calling the experience both “life-changing” and “deeply empowering.”
In a candid interview on Tuesday, the actress and humanitarian reflected on the emotional and physical journey she embarked on after choosing the procedure in 2013, when genetic testing revealed she carried the BRCA1 gene, which greatly increased her risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer.
Jolie said her decision was driven by her determination to take control of her health and secure a future for her family.
“I didn’t want fear to define my future. It was about choosing life and making sure my children would never have to lose their mother the way I lost mine,” she shared, referencing her late mother, Marcheline Bertrand, who passed away from ovarian cancer at 56.
The Oscar-winning actress explained that the surgery transformed her outlook on womanhood and strength.
“It wasn’t about losing something — it was about gaining peace of mind and the freedom to live without constant fear,” she said.
Jolie’s decision more than a decade ago sparked a global conversation about genetic testing, preventive medicine, and the empowerment of women through informed health choices.
Since then, she has remained a powerful advocate for **cancer awareness
