The grieving family of Ana Carolina Silva, a 41-year-old mother and nail salon owner from Sao José, Brazil, are demanding a deeper investigation into her shocking death after police concluded that she and her boyfriend, Jeferson Luiz Sagaz, 37, died from accidental heat exposure in a motel bathtub.
The couple were found dead inside a motel room bathtub on August 11, 2025, after a night out celebrating their daughter’s fourth birthday. According to authorities, both had no visible injuries, and the bathwater temperature reached 50°C, with a space heater set to its highest level nearby.
Investigators believe the pair passed out in the scalding bath after a night of drinking and drug use. A toxicology report revealed high levels of alcohol and traces of cocaine in their systems.
Chief Medical Examiner Andressa Boer Fronza stated:
“The cause of both deaths was exogenous poisoning, favouring heatstroke with intense dehydration, thermal collapse, and organ failure.”
Police ruled out foul play, electric shock, carbon monoxide poisoning, or drowning after conducting 16 forensic tests. They concluded that the combination of drugs, alcohol, and extreme heat caused their deaths.
Chief Inspector Felipe Simão noted that while the couple were social and outgoing, there was no evidence of a drug habit or prior violence between them.
“It may be that their physical constitutions were not compatible with the use of a substance like that, especially combined with alcohol,” he said.
Despite the official findings, Ana’s family has rejected the police conclusion, describing it as “cruel and incomplete.” They claim Ana was not a drug user and suggest she may have been forced to ingest substances or poisoned.
In a strongly worded statement, they said:
“It is with deep indignation that we, the family of Ana Carolina de Silva, repudiate the fake news that has been spread.
Although reports indicate the presence of substances in her blood, we affirm with complete certainty that Ana was not a drug user.”
The family has called for a rigorous, transparent, and impartial investigation, saying they are determined to preserve Ana’s memory and dignity.
“We will not allow her story to be tarnished by unjust assumptions. We will continue to seek answers until justice is served,” the statement added.
Ana and Jeferson had been together for nearly 20 years and shared a four-year-old daughter. On the day of their deaths, they had attended their daughter’s birthday celebration at a food park before going out to a nightclub. They later checked into the Dallas Motel just after midnight.
When they failed to pick up their daughter the following day, family members raised the alarm leading to the devastating discovery of their bodies.
Friends described the couple as devoted parents and well-loved members of their community. Their little girl is now reportedly in the care of relatives.
A night of celebration ended in unimaginable loss.
Ana’s family continues to fight for answers insisting the police theory “does not add up.”
