Tension and uncertainty have gripped Nigerian football fans ahead of the Super Eagles’ final 2026 World Cup Qualifier on Tuesday, as reports confirm that Benin Republic’s national team has arrived in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State while the Super Eagles remain stranded in Angola.
According to reports, the Nigerian team was en route from Polokwane, South Africa, aboard a chartered ValueJet Airline aircraft when an unexpected technical issue disrupted their travel plans.
The plane reportedly made a scheduled stop in Luanda, Angola, to refuel before continuing to Uyo. However, shortly after take-off, the aircraft suffered a cracked windscreen mid-air, forcing the pilot to return safely to the Luanda airport.
This sudden setback has delayed the team’s return to Nigeria, leaving the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) scrambling to make alternative flight arrangements.
Meanwhile, Benin’s squad, led by coach Eric Chelle, have already settled in Uyo and are expected to begin light training ahead of the crucial match.
The situation has sparked concern among fans and analysts who fear the delay could disrupt the Super Eagles’ preparations, especially given the importance of the upcoming fixture.
Nigeria’s qualification hopes remain alive after a 2–1 victory over Lesotho, but the team must defeat Benin Republic managed by former Eagles coach Gernot Rohr to stand a chance of securing a World Cup ticket.
Their fate also depends on South Africa dropping points against Rwanda in the other group match.
With less than 72 hours to kickoff, all eyes are now on the NFF to ensure the team returns home safely and on time for one of their most decisive games yet.
