A 19-year-old Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) student allegedly died by suicide at her rented residence in Kadusonnappanahalli, North Bengaluru, on Friday, after reportedly facing harassment from a senior student of her college.
The deceased, identified as Sana Parvin, was a second-year BBA student at Koshys College. She had been living with three other students in a paying guest accommodation at Green Garden Layout, Kadusonnappanahalli.
According to the complaint filed by Abdul Nazeer, Sana’s father and a resident of Kodagu district, he received a call from one of Sana’s teachers around 11 a.m. on Friday, informing him that his daughter had fallen unconscious.
When Nazeer reached Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Hospital at around 5 p.m., Sana’s friends told him that she had died by suicide earlier that morning, around 10 a.m.
In his complaint, Nazeer alleged that a man named Reefas, from Thrissur, Kerala, had been mentally torturing, abusing, and blackmailing his daughter through repeated phone calls and messages. He claimed that the harassment had pushed her into depression and ultimately led to her death.
Nazeer further stated that just a day before the incident, on Thursday, Reefas had left town. He also said that he had informed Amala Sen, Head of the BBA (Aviation) Department at Koshys College, about the harassment. According to him, the college had warned Reefas to stop troubling Sana, but the abuse reportedly continued.
The Bagalur Police have registered a case under Section 108 (Abetment of Suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) based on the father’s complaint.
Authorities confirmed that the accused, Reefas, is yet to be arrested, and an investigation is ongoing to verify the allegations and recover evidence such as phone records and messages exchanged between the two.
“We are examining the victim’s phone and digital communications to determine the extent of harassment and the events leading up to her death,” a senior investigating officer said.
Faculty members at Koshys College described Sana as a bright and soft-spoken student. Her sudden death has left classmates and teachers devastated. The college has said it will cooperate fully with the police investigation.
Sana’s body was handed over to her family after postmortem at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Hospital. Her funeral was held in Kodagu on Saturday.
In a separate and unrelated incident, Yamini Priya, a 20-year-old pharmacy student, was murdered in Bengaluru on Thursday by a man allegedly enraged after she rejected his marriage proposal.
According to the complaint filed by Yamini’s mother, the accused, Vignesh (26), who lived opposite their house, had been harassing her for months, pressuring her to marry him. He and an accomplice, Harish (30), have been arrested by the police.
