Nigerian dancer and singer, Yeni Kuti, has shared intimate details about the personal life of her late mother, Remilekun Anikulapo-Kuti, who was once married to Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Kuti.
Speaking during a live programme on TVC, Yeni disclosed that after leaving Fela’s home in 1981, her mother chose not to remarry or pursue another relationship until her death in 2002.
According to her, Remilekun lived celibately for over two decades, a decision rooted in her deep affection for the music legend. Despite battling health challenges, including cancer, she reportedly held firmly to her devotion to Fela.
Yeni recalled: “My mummy moved out of my father’s house in 1981, and she died in 2002. From 1981 till she died, she never met another man; she was celibate during that period. I knew, but I could never understand. She got cancer in between, and when the doctor asked why she isn’t using it, that it’s closing up, she said, ‘Fela is the only man for me.’”
Yeni added that while celibacy is a matter of personal choice, her mother’s story highlighted the complexities of love, loyalty, and sacrifice in marriage.
