A 28-year-old woman, Nandini Parihar, has been shot dead by her husband in Gwalior, India, just days after she publicly raised alarm that he was threatening her life.
The fatal shooting took place around noon near Roop Singh Stadium, one of the city’s busiest areas, sparking outrage over police inaction and women’s safety in the country.
According to eyewitnesses, Nandini was travelling in an auto-rickshaw with two friends after visiting the Superintendent of Police’s office to file yet another complaint against her abusive husband, Arvind Parihar. Arvind, who was following her in a separate rickshaw, intercepted her near the stadium and opened fire with a pistol, shooting her five times at close range.
“I was just coming from court when I heard gunshots. I saw him fire three bullets, one after the other, right into her. People were frozen in fear nobody dared catch him,” said MP Singh, a lawyer who witnessed the shooting.
After the attack, Arvind reportedly sat next to Nandini’s blood-soaked body, brandishing his pistol and daring onlookers to intervene. Police who arrived at the scene were forced to use tear gas to subdue him before arresting him.
Nandini was rushed to JAH Hospital, but despite efforts to save her, she died two hours later.
The killing came just days after Nandini spoke to the media outside the SP’s office, where she detailed years of abuse and harassment. She accused her husband of domestic violence, cyber harassment using AI-generated pornographic content, and multiple attempts on her life.
“My husband is using AI to make obscene photos and videos of me and upload them. He even tried to kill me by running a car over me. After coming out of jail, he started harassing me again, putting pressure on me to compromise. Whoever supports me, he abuses them as well. Nobody is listening to me,” Nandini said on September 9.
Police records show she had filed at least six complaints against Arvind since 2024, including cases of domestic abuse, attempted murder, and cyber harassment involving an alleged accomplice, Pooja Parihar.
Authorities believe Arvind was enraged after seeing a Facebook video showing Nandini attending a birthday party with a male friend. Officials say this triggered his violent attack.
Police official Heena Khan confirmed that Arvind has been arrested and charged with murder.
“A husband shot his wife dead under the jurisdiction of the University Police Station. An FIR has been registered, and the accused has been arrested. The woman was taken to hospital, where she died two hours later. She had been living separately from her husband and working in Delhi,” Khan said.
SP Dharamveer Singh also confirmed that six separate cases against Arvind were already pending. The weapon used in the killing has been seized, and investigations are ongoing.
The incident has triggered widespread outrage, with women’s rights groups condemning what they describe as systemic police inaction despite repeated warnings from the victim.
Campaigners say the case highlights the urgent need for stronger protective measures for women facing threats from abusive partners.
