Tensions flared in Bahiyal village of Gandhinagar district, Gujarat, late Wednesday night after an objectionable social media post sparked communal unrest, leading to vandalism, stone pelting, and mass detentions.
According to police, the violence was triggered by a WhatsApp status uploaded by a Hindu man that referenced the ongoing online trend “I love Muhammad.” The post angered members of the minority community, eventually escalating into violence.
Superintendent of Police Ravi Teja Vasamsetty said that the unrest began around 11 pm when a group of people targeted the shop belonging to the man who posted the status. “The shutters of the shop were broken, and goods were taken out and set on fire,” he confirmed.
The mob then allegedly vandalised four shops and five to six vehicles before proceeding to hurl stones at Hindu areas. In retaliation, stones were pelted back from the Hindu side, intensifying the clashes.
Police quickly moved in to contain the situation, detaining around 60 individuals suspected of involvement in the violence. “Heavy police deployment has been made in the area. The situation is now under control,” SP Vasamsetty told reporters.
Authorities have yet to confirm the number of injuries, though local sources indicated that several people sustained minor wounds during the stone pelting.
Officials said investigations are underway to determine the exact sequence of events and identify those responsible for inciting the violence. “We are scanning CCTV footage and mobile recordings. Strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty,” a senior officer added.
The incident has caused widespread unease in Bahiyal, a village with a mixed population of Hindus and Muslims. Local leaders from both communities have appealed for calm, urging residents not to fall prey to rumours or provocative content circulating online.
This is not the first time social media activity has triggered unrest in Gujarat. In recent years, authorities have repeatedly warned citizens against posting inflammatory content that could disturb communal harmony.
Police have said they will remain stationed in Bahiyal until tensions ease fully. The administration has also increased monitoring of online platforms to prevent further escalation.
