A tragic boat mishap has reportedly claimed the lives of several residents of Sokoto State who were fleeing a fresh attack by suspected bandits.
According to reports , the incident occurred on Thursday night when armed assailants invaded a community, forcing residents to flee in panic. In a desperate attempt to escape the violence, many boarded a boat. Unfortunately, the vessel struck a culvert mid-journey and capsized, throwing passengers into the water.
Eyewitnesses say scores are feared dead, although the exact number of casualties could not be immediately confirmed at the time of filing this report. Rescue efforts were still ongoing as emergency responders and locals scrambled to save those trapped.
The tragic incident adds to a growing list of boat accidents that have rocked Sokoto in recent weeks. On August 29, a boat mishap in Shagari Local Government Area left many passengers missing. Earlier, on August 18, another accident claimed at least three lives and left over 20 others unaccounted for.
These recurring tragedies highlight the dual crisis faced by rural communities in the state persistent insecurity on land and unsafe water transportation as residents flee from danger.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the latest incident, but many in Sokoto have been left in shock as they await news about their loved ones.
