Police Arrest Three Suspected Kidnappers After Killing of Man Despite N6.9m Ransom Payment

The Rivers State Police Command has arrested three suspected kidnappers accused of murdering a victim after collecting nearly ₦7 million in ransom.

Police spokesperson SP Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed the arrests in a statement on Monday, explaining that the suspects were linked to the abduction and killing of Humphrey Wagbara, a resident of Igwuruta-Atali in Ikwerre Local Government Area.

According to police reports, Mr. Wagbara was kidnapped on 26 August 2025. His family allegedly paid ₦6.9 million to secure his release, but the victim was killed by his abductors despite the ransom payment.

Further investigations revealed that the same gang was responsible for the abduction of Mercy Chinyere at the same location on 12 September 2025. She was released after her family paid ₦3.5 million.

Iringe-Koko said operatives of the Anti-Cultism Unit (ACU), Emohua Annex, carried out a daring and coordinated operation in the early hours of 19 September 2025. By 2:00 a.m., three suspects had been tracked down and arrested at different locations in Obio/Akpor and Ikwerre LGAs.

The suspects were identified as:

  • Hassan Mohammed, 20, from Wandigah Town, Mandagali LGA, Borno State.
  • Bello Abubakar, 25, from Roundabout Maura, Sokoto State.
  • Yusuf Ahmed, 23, from Hazari LGA, Bauchi State.

Police said investigations are ongoing, and efforts are being made to track down other members of the gang still at large.

The Rivers State Police Command has reiterated its warning to criminal gangs operating in the state, assuring residents that kidnappers and violent criminals will be hunted down.

“The command remains resolute in the fight against violent crimes. We urge residents to continue providing useful information that can help security agencies rid the state of criminal elements,” Iringe-Koko said.

The suspects are expected to face prosecution once investigations are concluded.
