The Akaajime community in Gboko Local Council of Benue State was thrown into confusion and grief on Tuesday after six members of the same family were discovered unconscious in their one-room apartment.
The victims were rushed to Vawar Clinic, but tragically, four-year-old Sughnen was confirmed dead on arrival.
According to the eldest daughter of the family, Mohivimze, she narrowly escaped becoming a victim herself. Speaking with a reporter, she explained that she had spent the night at her aunt’s house nearby and returned home around 10:00 a.m. to find their room unusually quiet and locked from the inside.
“When I knocked several times and got no response, I became worried. I had to force the door open, and that was when I saw my mother and siblings lying unconscious,” she recalled. Alarmed, she immediately raised the alarm, prompting neighbors to rush in and help convey the family to the hospital.
Mohivimze said she noticed a strange, harsh smell in the room, but she ruled out gas leakage or insecticide poisoning. According to her, the family did not use a gas cooker and had not sprayed chemicals, relying only on mosquito nets to keep safe from insects.
At the clinic, one of the victims, 11-year-old Aondohemba Joseph, managed to regain consciousness after receiving urgent medical attention. Narrating his terrifying experience, the boy said he had woken up that morning to prepare for school but suddenly found himself unable to move his limbs.
“I tried calling out to my mother, but she didn’t answer. That was when I knew something was very wrong,” Joseph explained.
As of the time of reporting, Joseph remained the only family member who had regained consciousness. His mother and four siblings were still unresponsive under medical care.
The incident has left the Akaajime community in shock, with residents anxiously awaiting updates on the survival of the remaining family members. The cause of the tragedy remains unclear, but authorities and medical officials are expected to investigate further.
