Tragedy struck in Niger State as a 10-year-old boy, identified as Yaseer Mustapha, was murdered by his abductors despite his guardian paying a ransom of ₦100,000 for his release.
The boy, who resided in the Kwana Mariga area, was reportedly abducted on July 24, 2025, while his guardian was away on the farm. His kidnappers initially demanded ₦3.5 million but later settled for ₦100,000 after negotiations.
It was gathered that the guardian, desperate to secure the boy’s freedom, paid the agreed sum into an account provided by the abductors without informing the police. However, the kidnappers failed to release the child. Instead, they called again and demanded an additional ₦10,000, which was paid to one Abdulmajid Dan-Azumi, also of Kwana.
When there was still no word from the abductors after the second payment, the guardian eventually reported the matter to the police on September 13, 2025.
Confirming the incident in Minna on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the case was immediately transferred to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
According to him, operatives trailed and arrested Abdulmajid Dan-Azumi, whose arrest later led to the capture of his accomplice, Abdulnafiu Usman, both residents of Kwana-Mariga.
SP Abiodun revealed that during interrogation, the suspects confessed to killing the boy and burying his body inside an uncompleted building in the neighborhood. Police operatives were subsequently led to the site, where the decomposed remains of Yaseer were recovered.
“The body has since been released to the family for burial rites, while the suspects have been charged to court,” the PPRO stated.
