Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, has been thrown into mourning and tension following the discovery of the lifeless bodies of children inside the boot of an abandoned car in a residential compound.
The Borno State Police Command confirmed the incident, with Commissioner of Police Nazir Abdulmajid stating that operatives immediately visited the scene, documented evidence, and evacuated the bodies to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for autopsy.
According to Abdulmajid, the cause of death remains unclear. Authorities are still investigating whether the children were kidnapped and murdered, or if they had strayed into the vehicle and suffocated.
“For now, we cannot really say what transpired. We have not established that it is linked to any political killing. But the autopsy will give the proofs,” the police commissioner explained.
The deaths have triggered widespread anger and suspicion among residents, with many insisting the case has strong political undertones.
Local security analyst Zagazola Makama noted that the circumstances have fueled speculation and deep distrust in the community.
On Facebook, activist Aliyu Haidar Zaifada alleged political foul play, writing: “These innocent children’s only crime was being born to an outspoken father who speaks truth to power. This is purely politics.”
In Maiduguri, grief has quickly turned to outrage. A resident, Hajiya Falmata, described the killings as “evil,” while Malam Usman, a local trader, said: “There was no ransom, no demand. This is politics, and it is dirty.”
A university student, Fatima, expressed fear over the wider implications for society: “Today it is Zannah’s children. Tomorrow, it may be someone else’s.”
As the city reels from the tragedy, calls for justice have intensified. Many residents are demanding accountability and urgent government action to ensure families are protected from what they see as growing political violence.
For now, the unanswered question lingers: did the children tragically suffocate in an accident, or were they victims of deliberate, politically motivated murder?
The autopsy report is expected to shed light on the circumstances, but until then, Maiduguri remains on edge, caught between grief and suspicion.
