A Howard County man has been charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of his fiancée, just days after the couple announced their engagement.
Police identified the suspect as Rondale Dickerson, 34, who is accused of killing Shelaya Broadwater, 44, inside her apartment on the morning of September 18.
Authorities said the crime was discovered when Broadwater’s 14-year-old son found her body inside the home and placed a desperate 911 call. Dispatch audio reportedly captured officers saying, “Your caller is going to be 14 years old advising that they found their mom deceased, also advising that there is blood everywhere.”
Investigators believe Dickerson forced his way into the apartment following an argument with Broadwater. Police say he launched a violent attack, fatally stabbing her before fleeing the scene.
Hours later, officers located Dickerson at a nearby Walmart. He appeared disheveled, shirtless, and bleeding from several gashes and cuts that police believe were sustained during the attack. He later admitted to the killing.
In a statement, Howard County police confirmed Dickerson has been charged with first- and second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and home invasion.
Broadwater’s son told investigators that tensions between his mother and Dickerson had escalated, though the exact motive for the killing remains unclear. Detectives noted that the couple had only recently become engaged, making the incident all the more shocking.
During a court hearing on Monday, prosecutors described the killing as “brutal, vicious, and full of rage.” They argued that Dickerson posed both a flight risk and a danger to the community. The judge agreed and denied him bail.
Authorities emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing as they continue to piece together what led to the deadly confrontation.
