Former Arsenal academy forward Billy Vigar has died at the age of 21 after suffering a severe head injury during a match for Chichester City.
The incident occurred last weekend in a game against Wingate & Finchley, when Vigar collided with a hard surface at the side of the pitch. He was treated on the field by paramedics before being airlifted to hospital. The match was subsequently abandoned.
Chichester City confirmed in a statement that Vigar had been placed in an induced coma following surgery, but he passed away on Thursday, September 25.
“After sustaining a significant brain injury last Saturday, Billy Vigar was put in an induced coma,” the club said. “On Tuesday he needed an operation to aid any chances of recovery. Although this helped, the injury proved too much for him and he passed away on Thursday morning. His family are devastated that this has happened whilst he was playing the sport that he loved.”
The club added that their upcoming fixture against Lewes has been postponed as a mark of respect.
Vigar came through Arsenal’s Hale End academy, featuring for the U18s and U21s before leaving in 2024. He later played for Hastings and Eastbourne Borough before joining Chichester City this summer.
Arsenal also paid tribute, writing: “Wishing you a speedy recovery, Billy. Everyone at Arsenal sends love and support to Billy and his loved ones at this difficult time.”
Tributes have continued to pour in from across the football community for the young forward, remembered for his talent and passion for the game.
