Mavin Records boss Don Jazzy has opened up on how he discovered and signed Afrobeats superstar Ayra Starr to his record label.
In an interview with Echo, the music executive explained that he had noticed a gap in the industry at the time — the absence of a teenage Afrobeats superstar — and was actively searching for young talent to fill that space.
According to him, he asked a contact to scout for promising singers within universities. Among the list of names and social media handles he received was Ayra Starr’s Instagram page.
What stood out for Don Jazzy was a freestyle video Ayra Starr had posted on drug abuse, a theme he described as relevant to the challenges facing Gen Z. That performance convinced him that she was the artist he had been looking for.
He revealed that he first reached out to Ayra Starr directly but, when she didn’t respond, he contacted her brother instead — a move that eventually led to her signing with Mavin Records, where she has since grown into one of the leading voices of Afrobeats.
