A funeral in Argentina turned into a scene of chaos and disbelief when a young man, presumed dead, suddenly appeared alive and well at his own wake.
The 22-year-old shocked mourners, who had gathered to pay their last respects, when he walked in and exclaimed: “I’m alive!” Witnesses described the moment as surreal some screamed, others fainted, while many were simply too stunned to react.
The strange turn of events started on Thursday, September 18, when a man was killed after being struck by a sugarcane truck. Authorities at first suspected suicide but later classified the case as negligent homicide.
The following day, a woman came forward claiming the victim was her son. She said she recognized him by his clothes and physical features. With no further checks made, the authorities released the body to the grieving family, who organized a wake over the weekend.
During the funeral, just as mourners were preparing for the burial, the woman’s actual son suddenly appeared at the service. He explained that he had been on a multi-day drinking spree in Alderetes, a town north of Córdoba, and had no idea about the tragedy unfolding back home.
The revelation threw the entire ceremony into chaos. Shock turned to confusion, and soon police were called in to identify the real body inside the coffin.
After further investigation, the body was confirmed to be that of Maximiliano Enrique Acosta, 28, from the nearby town of Delfín Gallo. The remains were returned to his rightful family, who then held a proper funeral on Tuesday, September 23.
But even then, more mistakes followed. According to Maximiliano’s relatives, authorities first showed them the wrong body at the morgue before finally handing over the correct remains.
His brother Hernán expressed his anger:
“Everything was wrong from the beginning. First, they handed over the body without proper identification. Then they made me go to the morgue twice. We shouldn’t have to go through this after everything we suffered.”
The shocking mix-up has sparked outrage in the community and raised serious questions about the handling of accident victims. The Public Prosecutor’s Office has now launched an internal investigation to determine how the errors happened and to prevent such a traumatic mistake from ever happening again.
For the family who briefly believed their son had come back from the dead and the family who had to wait longer to properly bury their loved one, the ordeal has left deep scars.
