Veteran Nigerian singer, songwriter, actor, and activist Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has revealed how Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi once surprised him with a “Ghana Must Go” bag packed with local items.
Narrating the incident in a social media post, Charly Boy said Obi had called him around 1 a.m., informing him of his plan to visit between 5 and 6 a.m. that same morning. Though the early visit meant he would have to forgo his routine scooter ride and exercise, Charly Boy said he quickly agreed, stressing that he would “do anything for Peter Obi.”
According to him, Obi arrived punctually at 5:45 a.m., and they spent about two hours discussing politics, family, and personal matters.
The entertainer said that while coming downstairs, he noticed a large “Ghana Must Go” bag in his living room and wondered what was inside. At the end of their meeting, Obi simply told him he had brought “something small” for him.
When Charly Boy finally opened the bag after Obi’s departure, he burst into laughter at its unusual contents: three bottles of roasted groundnuts, kola nuts, alligator pepper, pawpaw, oranges, mangoes, bananas, agara, and other fruits — all carefully packed by Obi himself.
Charly Boy said he was so amused that he fell to the ground laughing before calling Obi to express his gratitude. Obi’s reply, however, left an even deeper impression on him:
“I can’t give you money, but I can give you those things in the bag because I picked them by myself.”
The gesture, though simple, has drawn admiration online, with many praising Obi for his humility and authenticity.
