Akwa Ibom Court Sentences Dismissed Soldier to Death for Murder of Businessman

An Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in Uyo has sentenced a dismissed soldier, Corporal Stephen Iweh, to death by hanging for the murder of a 42-year-old businessman, Christopher Enobong Jimmy.

The incident occurred on May 23, 2021, along the East-West Road in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area. The late Jimmy, a clearing and forwarding manager in Port Harcourt, had offered Iweh a lift from Trailer Park in Onne, Rivers State, to Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom.

At Oboro Junction in Ikot Abasi, the 39-year-old soldier shot Jimmy dead before fleeing with his Toyota Matrix car and other valuables.

Court records revealed that Iweh, who joined the Nigerian Army in 2002, was dismissed from the 6 Battalion, Ibagwa, Abak. He was said to have illegally kept an AK-47 rifle, which he claimed to have picked up in Dambou, Borno State, in 2018. On the day of the killing, he abandoned his duty post at the battalion’s store to commit the crime.

He was later traced to Andy Guest House in Ukanafun, where he was arrested. The rifle used in the crime was also recovered from him.

Delivering judgment, the trial judge, Justice Bassey Nkanang, held that the prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt that Iweh murdered Jimmy, robbed him of his vehicle, and unlawfully possessed a firearm without a license.

The court consequently convicted him on a three-count charge and sentenced him to death by hanging.
