A chilling murder case has surfaced in Punjab, shocking the NRI community worldwide. 72-year-old Rupinder Kaur Pandher, an Indian-origin US citizen from Seattle, was brutally murdered in Kila Raipur village near Ludhiana after being lured to India under the pretext of marriage.
Police say the prime suspect, 75-year-old UK-based NRI Charanjit Singh Grewal, convinced Rupinder to travel to Punjab in July with promises of marriage. However, investigators allege that Grewal had already conspired with Sukhjeet Singh alias Sonu to eliminate her for financial gain.
On the night of July 12–13, Sonu allegedly strangled Rupinder and attempted to destroy all traces of the crime. According to the police confession, he burned her body with diesel inside a storeroom, doused the remains with water, and scattered the ashes in a nearby drain. Despite the attempt to erase evidence, police have recovered partial skeletal remains, which have been sent for forensic analysis.
Investigators claim that Grewal promised Rs 50 lakh to Sonu for carrying out the murder. Grewal’s brother and several associates have also been named in the FIR and are currently absconding.
The case only came to light after Rupinder’s sister, Kamal Kaur Khaizah, who lives in the US, grew concerned when she could not contact her sibling for four days. She reached out to the US Embassy in India, which pressed Punjab Police to investigate. A breakthrough came with Sonu’s arrest, leading to his confession.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Harjinder Singh Gill confirmed the confession and said further investigations are underway to secure Grewal’s arrest and trace his accomplices.
The disturbing case highlights how vulnerable elderly NRIs can be when traveling back to India under false pretenses. Both US and UK authorities are expected to coordinate with Punjab Police as the probe deepens.
