The murder of Vicky Glass remains one of the most haunting unsolved cases in the North East, with police still searching for her killer 25 years after her disappearance.
Vicky, just 21 years old, was last seen alive on 24 September 2000, after being dropped off by a taxi in Middlesbrough. Six weeks later, her body was discovered in a remote stream in Danby, North Yorkshire, badly decomposed after weeks in water. Investigators described the condition of her body as “horrific,” noting that several of her organs and bones were missing.
At an inquest in 2003, pathologist Dr Kenneth Shorrock admitted that decomposition made it impossible to establish an exact cause of death. The coroner, Michael Oakley, added:
“We don’t know how she came to be where she was found, we don’t know the cause of death, or whether a third party was directly or indirectly involved in her death.”
Vicky’s family described her as “quiet and very vulnerable.” Despite battling a serious drug addiction, her father, Anthony Glass, insisted she “didn’t have a bad bone in her body.” Detectives revealed she had a happy childhood but fell into destructive circles in her late teens, where she was exploited, drawn into sex work, and pressured to raise money for drugs.
Over the years, investigators arrested four different suspects in connection with her murder, but each was released without charge due to lack of evidence. The original investigation left many unanswered questions, and by 2021, Cleveland Police admitted a fresh review was needed. That review generated over 300 recommendations, leading to a reinvestigation that uncovered new leads.
One of the most significant breakthroughs came from CCTV footage, which captured Vicky on the day she vanished. The images revealed she was wearing light-coloured trousers, a light-coloured top, white trainers, and a dark puffer-style jacket. In the footage, Vicky appeared alongside a friend who later gave a detailed account to detectives.
The friend recalled that shortly after the CCTV was taken, Vicky was seen speaking to a lorry driver, who gave her money. She reportedly left some belongings with him and planned to meet him again later that day.
Police are now urgently trying to identify this driver, described as a white male, aged 34–38 at the time, broad build, with a distinctive mole on his face. Investigators believe he could be a key witness or even directly linked to her disappearance and death.
For Vicky’s loved ones, the past 25 years have been filled with grief, frustration, and unanswered questions. Her mother, Deborah Goodall, sadly passed away in 2015 without ever knowing what happened to her daughter. Her father, Anthony, continues to appeal for justice:
“People say time heals but it doesn’t. You don’t exist as such you lose track of time. Somebody must know what happened. Maybe they weren’t there, but if they know something they need to tell the police. Twenty-five years is a long time.”
Despite countless interviews, reinvestigations, and national appeals, the mystery of who killed Vicky Glass remains unsolved. Detectives remain convinced there are people with knowledge of the case who have yet to come forward.
Police continue to urge anyone with information no matter how small to contact them, stressing that even the tiniest detail could finally unlock the truth about what happened to Vicky in September 2000.
