Tragedy in Benue: 25-Year-Old Man Allegedly Stabs Cousin to Death During Dispute

A family dispute turned deadly in Makurdi, Benue State, when a 25-year-old man, Abdulraman Rabiu, allegedly stabbed his own cousin, Adamu Abubakar, to death during a fight. The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at Lafia Garage in the North Bank area of the state capital.

According to eyewitnesses, the two cousins got into a heated argument that quickly escalated into a physical confrontation. During the scuffle, Abdulraman reportedly pulled out a sharp object and stabbed Adamu multiple times. The motive behind the argument is still unclear, though police suspect it may have been related to a long-standing family issue.

In the aftermath of the stabbing, chaos broke out at the scene as a mob of onlookers turned on the suspect. Bystanders who witnessed the attack descended on Abdulraman, beating him severely before security operatives arrived and managed to rescue him from the mob.

Both Abdulraman and the injured Adamu were rushed to Divine Love Hospital in the Low Level area of Makurdi. However, medical personnel confirmed that Adamu succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival, despite efforts to save his life.

The suspect, who remains hospitalized under police watch, is reportedly in stable condition. Authorities have confirmed that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation.

A police source, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated: “We are aware of the incident and have taken the suspect into custody. Preliminary investigations are ongoing to determine what led to the tragic altercation.”

The tragic event has sent shockwaves through the local community, with many residents expressing sadness and concern over the increasing rate of violence in the area.

As of now, the police are urging the public to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their own hands, assuring that justice will be served.
