A Texas man is facing serious criminal charges after allegedly murdering his wife and concealing her decomposing body inside their home for nearly a month. Authorities say the suspect, 49-year-old Charles Byrd, made chilling comments to investigators, including that he wanted to “go big” with his first crime.
According to a report on Tuesday, Byrd has been taken into custody by the Bexar County Sheriff's Office and is currently being held at the Bexar County Jail without legal representation. His 44-year-old wife, Angela Byrd, was reported missing by concerned family members who grew suspicious after not hearing from her for several weeks. When relatives contacted authorities, deputies visited the couple’s home and were immediately struck by the strong odor of what they described as "rotting meat."
Inside the house, investigators discovered a plastic bag that appeared to contain human remains. While the medical examiner's office has not yet formally confirmed the identity of the body or determined the cause of death, officials believe the remains are those of Angela Byrd. Her family has been notified of the discovery.
Sheriff Javier Salazar described Byrd’s demeanor as unsettling and devoid of remorse. “One of the moments that stuck with me the most was when he told investigators, ‘I’ve never been arrested before… go big or go home,’” Salazar said during a press briefing. Byrd allegedly displayed a flat, matter-of-fact attitude while recounting what had happened, offering little in the way of guilt or emotion.
The suspect had reportedly been telling relatives that the foul smell in the house was due to spoiled food or plumbing issues, all while allegedly hiding Angela’s body within the home since approximately June 16, the date authorities believe she was killed during what Byrd claimed was a physical confrontation.
Byrd was arrested a day after the discovery, found roughly a mile from the couple’s residence. In video footage released by the sheriff’s office, he can be seen being escorted by deputies in restraints, both at the ankles and wrists. When approached by a local reporter, Byrd reportedly murmured, “I’m really sorry,” and claimed, “I had a mental break,” while also insisting he still loved his wife.
So far, Byrd has been charged with tampering with evidence related to a human corpse. Sheriff Salazar said that once the medical examiner officially rules the death a homicide, Byrd is expected to face a murder charge. The sheriff also confirmed that multiple other individuals have been arrested in connection to the case, though he declined to share their names or elaborate on their alleged involvement.
Meanwhile, Byrd is undergoing a court-ordered mental health evaluation as the investigation into Angela Byrd’s tragic death continues.
