At least seven people have been confirmed dead and several others critically injured following a coordinated attack by suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on communities in Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State.
The gunmen reportedly invaded the Ndi-Ejezie, Umualaoma, and Ndiakuwata Uno communities in the Arondizuogu axis during the early hours of Friday, leaving a trail of destruction, panic, and grief in their wake.
Confirming the attack in a statement issued Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Imo State Command, DSP Okoye Henry, said that “over seven persons” were gruesomely murdered in the onslaught, while others sustained life-threatening injuries.
The statement quoted the Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, who described the attack as “barbaric, inhumane, and totally unacceptable.” He assured residents that the Command was taking immediate and decisive action to apprehend those responsible.
“The Commissioner of Police has deployed tactical teams and intelligence assets to comb the affected areas. He has taken personal charge of the situation and affirms that normalcy is being restored through reinforced security patrols,” the statement read.
While the exact number of casualties remains unclear, local residents report widespread fear and displacement, with many families fleeing their homes for fear of further violence.
Community sources allege that the attackers arrived in large numbers, heavily armed, and operated with impunity for several hours before dispersing. Several homes and vehicles were reportedly set ablaze during the rampage.
Authorities have not officially named any group, but the method and style of attack bear the hallmark of similar assaults previously attributed to IPOB’s armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). IPOB has consistently denied involvement in violent activities, despite being declared a terrorist organization by the Nigerian government in 2017.
Security experts are calling for increased intelligence coordination and community policing in the South-East region to prevent further loss of life and restore stability.
The Imo State Police Command is urging anyone with useful information to come forward, even as investigations and manhunts intensify.
