Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, widely known as Saudi Arabia’s "Sleeping Prince", has died at the age of 36, nearly two decades after falling into a coma following a car crash in London.
His death was confirmed by his father, Prince Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz, who posted a heartfelt message on social media on Saturday:
“With hearts believing in Allah’s will and decree, and with deep sorrow and sadness, we mourn our beloved son: Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, may Allah have mercy on him, who passed away today.”
Prince Al-Waleed was just 15 years old when he suffered a traumatic brain injury and brain haemorrhage in 2005 following a car accident in London, where he was studying at a military college.
Since the accident, the prince had been kept in a long-term coma, receiving continuous medical care at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh. Despite extensive consultations with global medical experts and occasional signs of minor physical response, he never regained consciousness.
His father, Prince Khaled, became a prominent figure in discussions around prolonged life support and remained adamantly opposed to withdrawing care, often expressing hope that his son might one day recover.
Prince Al-Waleed’s condition was followed closely over the years by the Saudi public, many of whom regularly offered prayers and support. Videos of the prince showing slight movement occasionally sparked renewed hope and attention.
Following news of his passing, tributes have poured in from across the Kingdom and beyond, mourning the loss and commending the family’s dedication and resilience throughout the prince’s long health battle.
Funeral and burial arrangements have not yet been publicly announced.
Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled leaves behind a legacy that has touched many hearts, symbolizing both endurance and the strength of familial devotion through two decades of unwavering care.
