The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 29-year-old man, Victor Kalu, who allegedly attempted to take his own life on the premises of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) in Ibafo, Ogun State.
Kalu was reportedly spotted around 10:45 p.m. on Friday night attempting to hang himself from an electric pole inside the church compound. His suicide attempt was thwarted by the quick intervention of the church’s Chief Security Officer, who immediately raised the alarm.
The suspect was later handed over to the Ibafo Divisional Police Headquarters around 10:10 a.m. on Saturday.
According to police sources, Kalu, a resident of Plot 7, Oluwa Sesan Street, Ejigbo Road, Ikotun, Lagos, told investigators that he was overwhelmed by severe financial hardship, which stemmed from an unpaid loan obtained from an online lending platform.
“He explained that after receiving constant threats from the loan company and seeing no means of repaying the debt, he decided to end his life by hanging himself at the church premises,” a police official said.
Detectives from the Ibafo Division visited the scene, took photographs, and obtained statements from the complainant, witnesses, and the suspect.
The police confirmed that Victor Kalu is currently in custody, and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing.
The case highlights the growing concerns over mental health and the financial pressure faced by young Nigerians in the wake of rising debt from unregulated online loan apps.
