A gas explosion at a fast-food restaurant in the Ajah area of Lagos State has claimed the life of a 20-year-old employee and left 13 others with severe burn injuries, the Lagos State Police Command confirmed on Sunday.
The tragic incident occurred around 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, at No. 5 Spring Garden Estate on Orchid Road, Ajah. Preliminary investigations suggest a suspected gas leak triggered the powerful blast, which caused a fire that quickly engulfed the premises.
The affected restaurant is reportedly owned by Uchechukwu Godwill Villason.
Victims Trapped, Rushed to Hospital
According to police sources, the explosion trapped several employees inside the building before emergency responders arrived. Thirteen staff members sustained various degrees of burns and were immediately rushed to the General Hospital in Gbagada for treatment.
One of the victims, identified as Kingsley Promise, a 20-year-old from Akwa Ibom State, succumbed to her injuries while receiving medical care. Her body has been transferred to the Mainland General Hospital mortuary in Yaba for autopsy.
Police Investigation Underway
Officers from the Lagos State Police Command visited the scene of the explosion to assess the damage and collect evidence. They later visited the injured victims at the hospital to gather further information.
In a statement, the police emphasized that a full-scale investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the explosion.
"We are urging all business owners, especially those using gas-powered equipment, to implement stringent safety measures and carry out routine maintenance checks to avoid similar tragedies," the statement read.
