Off-Duty NYPD Officer Killed in Manhattan Office Shooting Identified as Didarul Islam, Father of Two
An off-duty New York City police officer was among four people shot and killed Monday morning after a gunman opened fire at a Midtown Manhattan office tower. The officer has been identified as 36-year-old Didarul Islam, a Bronx resident, father of two, and a 3½-year veteran of the NYPD. His wife is currently pregnant with their third child.
The shooting took place at around 9:20 a.m. inside 345 Park Avenue, a high-rise commercial building that houses major corporate offices, including Blackstone and the NFL. According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the suspect entered the building through the main lobby and immediately opened fire on Officer Islam before proceeding to shoot additional victims on several floors.
The shooter, identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura of Las Vegas, was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities confirmed that four people, including Islam, were killed in the attack — two women and one other man among the victims — while a fifth person remains hospitalized in critical condition. Four others sustained injuries while attempting to escape and were treated for non-life-threatening wounds.
At a press conference held Monday evening at Weill Cornell Medical Center, Mayor Eric Adams honored Officer Islam, describing him as a man of courage, faith, and dedication. “He was doing what he does best — saving lives and protecting New Yorkers,” Adams said. “He loved this city. Everyone we spoke to described him as a person of faith, a man who believed in God, and who lived according to those values. He embodied what this city is all about. He’s a true-blue New Yorker.”
Commissioner Tisch echoed those sentiments, calling Islam “a hero who died doing the job he had sworn to do, even while off-duty.” She added that Islam was the first victim targeted by Tamura and emphasized that he had no opportunity to defend himself before being shot.
Tamura, the suspect, reportedly had a documented history of mental health issues. While the motive for the shooting remains under investigation, authorities believe he acted alone and stated there is no active threat to the public.
Officer Islam, who immigrated from Bangladesh, joined the NYPD in early 2021 and served with distinction in the 44th Precinct in the Bronx. He was widely respected by colleagues and known in his community as a dedicated public servant and family man.
“Tonight, our city is reeling, and four innocent families are mourning, including the family of NYPD Officer Didarul Islam,” Mayor Adams later wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “He represented the best of New York City — an immigrant from Bangladesh who put on a uniform to protect and serve us all.”
Counseling and support services are being provided to the victims’ families as well as officers in the NYPD. Flags across city buildings have been lowered to half-staff in honor of Officer Islam’s sacrifice.
The NYPD and FBI are continuing their joint investigation into the shooting, including how the gunman gained access to the building and whether any prior warnings were missed.
More information will be released as the investigation unfolds.
