Nine Convicted for Internet Fraud as EFCC Recovers Millions, Issues Stern Warning to Nigerian Youths
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the conviction of nine individuals in Ilorin, Kwara State, for their roles in various internet-related fraud activities, including impersonation and laundering of illicit funds.
Among those sentenced is 31-year-old gospel singer Otitoju Moses Sesan, who was found guilty of possessing over N8.4 million in his UBA bank account, proceeds traced to fraudulent schemes.
Other convicts include:
- Ayodele Joseph Daisi
- Adeoye Joseph
- Abubakar Aliyu Abdulmalik
- Emeka Oluwatobi Achi
- Isaac Babalola Oluwafemi
- Afolabi Faith Olatoye
- Zubeiru Zubeiru Junior
- Abdulkadir Taofeek
The convictions, which were handed down by both the Federal High Court and the Kwara State High Court, follow investigations and prosecutions led by the EFCC's Ilorin Zonal Command. The commission presented a range of compelling evidence, including confessional statements, electronic devices, and traceable financial transactions linked to illegal online activity.
Sentences ranged from six months to three years in prison, with some convicts given options of fines, depending on the severity of their offences. In addition, several valuable items and financial assets, including iPhones, Samsung devices, foreign currency, and millions of naira, were forfeited to the Federal Government.
In one notable ruling, a convict was ordered to refund over N3.3 million within three months and report regularly to the EFCC office.
The EFCC reiterated that these convictions are part of its ongoing efforts to clamp down on internet fraud, popularly referred to as "Yahoo Yahoo," and warned Nigerian youths against engaging in such criminal activities.
“These convictions should serve as a clear warning to others involved in cybercrime. The EFCC remains resolute in its mandate to investigate, prosecute, and recover proceeds of crime,” said an EFCC spokesperson.
The commission also emphasized the importance of ethical conduct among Nigerian youths and encouraged them to pursue legitimate avenues for success, rather than resorting to internet fraud.
