In a shocking case of online gaming addiction turning fatal, police in Mumbai have arrested a 32-year-old man for allegedly murdering his stepmother after she refused to give him money to continue playing an online game. The suspect's father has also been arrested for aiding in the cover-up.
The deceased, Arshia Khusru, 61, was a resident of Periyar Apartment in Vasai West. She was initially reported to have died from a fall on July 26, with her family conducting her last rites without a postmortem.
However, following suspicious circumstances surrounding her death, the Mira Bhayandar Vasai Virar Police launched an investigation and subsequently arrested Imran Khusru, her stepson. According to police, Imran confessed to the murder, citing frustration after being denied Rs 1.8 lakh to spend on an online game.
Investigators say that during an argument, Imran allegedly slammed Arshia’s head against a wall and kicked her in the face, resulting in fatal injuries. After killing her, he reportedly stole her gold jewellery.
In a disturbing twist, police revealed that Imran's father, 65-year-old Amir Ismail Khusru, helped destroy evidence. He allegedly used personal connections to obtain a fake death certificate and convinced family members that Arshia died due to an accidental fall.
“The postmortem was deliberately avoided to conceal the crime. However, further investigation revealed inconsistencies, prompting a deeper probe that led to both arrests,” said a police spokesperson.
The duo is now in custody and facing charges including murder, destruction of evidence, and conspiracy. Police emphasized the need for awareness about the potential dangers of digital addiction and its severe psychological consequences.
