A community is in shock following the tragic deaths of two young siblings, four-year-old Esther Arinze and three-month-old Chibusoma Arinze, allegedly at the hands of their mother in what authorities suspect may have been a mental health crisis.
The incident occurred early Monday morning at No. 47 Unity Road in the Trans Ekulu area of Enugu. According to the Enugu State Police Command, officers from the Trans Ekulu Division responded to a distress call around 9:00 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered the lifeless bodies of the children bearing injuries believed to have been inflicted with a sharp object.
The mother, 29-year-old Chidima Arinze, was arrested at the scene without resistance. She is currently in custody, and police say the case is under preliminary investigation, with plans to transfer it to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a more comprehensive probe.
The children’s remains were taken to the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUT), Parklane, where a medical officer confirmed their deaths. An autopsy is pending to determine the precise cause of death.
While the motive behind the alleged killings has not been officially established, police are exploring the possibility of postpartum mental health complications. A psychological evaluation of the suspect is expected to shed more light on her mental state at the time of the incident.
Neighbors expressed disbelief over the tragedy, describing Chidima as a quiet and seemingly stable individual.
“This is beyond comprehension for our community,” said one resident, who requested anonymity. “She seemed normal, we had no idea she was going through anything like this.”
The Enugu State Police Command has assured the public that the investigation will be handled with “diligence and sensitivity,” acknowledging the emotional weight of the situation.
“We are committed to uncovering all the facts, including any mental health factors that may have contributed to this tragedy,” said a senior police official.
The Trans Ekulu community remains deeply shaken by the loss of the two children.
“This is a tragedy that leaves no one untouched,” another neighbor said. “Those children deserved better, now an entire family has been shattered.”
