A Minnesota woman has been charged with attempted second-degree murder and assault after allegedly trying to slit her son’s throat, claiming she was under the control of demonic forces.
Edwina Marie Stoutenburgh, 34, was arrested on Sunday, July 20, following a disturbing call to police made by her husband, who reported that his wife had phoned him in a state of panic, insisting she was possessed by demons.
According to a statement from the Pennington County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to the family’s residence on Sunday morning. Upon arrival, they found Stoutenburgh outside the home and immediately placed her in handcuffs. She reportedly told officers, “Don’t take them off,” suggesting she posed a danger to others.
Stoutenburgh now faces charges of attempted second-degree murder without intent and second-degree assault.
Chilling Confession
Court documents detail a series of disturbing admissions made by Stoutenburgh during police questioning. She told authorities she believed she was possessed by two demons she identified as “Bondage” and “Infirmity.” Under their influence, she claimed to have eaten dog feces, decapitated the family’s pet duck, consumed its eye, and presented the severed head to her children.
The most alarming revelation came when she allegedly confessed to attempting to kill her son by slitting his throat in order to drink his blood. Stoutenburgh stated that although she did not wish to harm her children, she felt compelled to act by the demons.
She described rolling her son over in bed, tilting his head back, and attempting to cut his throat with a kitchen knife. The child sustained injuries that were later determined to be non-life-threatening.
According to the affidavit, Stoutenburgh left the room momentarily to sharpen the knife in the kitchen. Her plan was reportedly interrupted when her other children, panicked by the incident, intervened. She later told police she tried to release the knife but was unable to due to the demons' control. She then gave her children the keys to her car and urged them to flee.
Ongoing Investigation
Stoutenburgh told officers that this was the most intense and prolonged demonic episode she had ever experienced. She is currently being held without bail at the Pennington County Jail and is scheduled to make her initial court appearance on Monday, July 28.
The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that child protective services have been notified.
